Place in the causal chain of Civilization Leap

Why this question needs its own discussion

Countries, organizations and individuals all need to protect themselves. Yet when capabilities proliferate, attribution is difficult, pressure to act first is strong and critical dependencies coexist, each party’s efforts to strengthen its own security may instead make everyone less safe. This work explains that counterintuitive problem.

What this page clarifies

Understand why choices that are reasonable for each party may accumulate into shared insecurity, and why simply intensifying established forms of self-protection may not be enough.

The problem this work addresses

Begin with capability diffusion, critical dependencies, difficult attribution, autonomy after links are severed and first-mover pressure: why locally rational self-protection can jointly produce greater insecurity, and why stopping danger must lead onward to a change in civilizational logic.
