If AI replaces large amounts of work, our first thought is income: What happens without jobs? Who pays living costs? These are real questions.

But work means more than income.

Work also tells a person: Someone needs me; what I do has results; I have a place in our shared life.

Losing a job and losing one's place are different

Income can be replaced through new forms of distribution, and time can be reorganized through new arrangements for living.

But if a person repeatedly receives the message that their abilities are no longer needed and they are merely someone to be looked after, the harm goes deeper.

They lose more than wages: they lose a source of affirmation of their value.

A person may accept being without work for a time, but find it much harder to accept indefinitely that the world has no place that needs them.

This is why money for everyone is not a complete answer

Material security matters and should become increasingly reliable. But if civilization solves income without addressing relationships, contribution, creation, care, and being needed, new gaps will remain.

Someone caring for family, keeping a neighbor company, sharing experience, or creating work without a market price does not lack a contribution simply because they have no payslip.

The historical problem is that these contributions often did not register within public measures of value.

The AI era should open new ways for value to be expressed

As machines take over more tasks that must be done, people should not be forced to invent new meaningless work merely to prove they are still useful.

A better direction gives more room to creation, protection, connection, care, companionship, exploration, and real contribution, so that being needed no longer comes only from a job.

Central judgment
The deeper risk to people's inner lives in the AGI era is not merely unemployment, but widespread loss of being needed. The real opportunity is not simply to create more jobs, but to reopen the sources of human value.

Keep asking

If machines are more useful than you, do you still matter?
